Show moreCommunity and junior colleges are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of adding international dimensions to the curriculum. As community-based institutions, the community colleges have begun to recognize the importance of education for international understanding. Community college presidents, national organizations, and government officials have cited international education as a priority for two-year institutions in the corning decade. The purpose of this study was to research international education programs at the eight Florida community and junior colleges which held membership in the Florida Collegiate Consortium for International / Intercultural Education during 1979. The international education officers were queried regarding the status of international education within their institutions. Seven of the eight officers cited the commitment of the president of the college as a major factor contributing to their college's involvement in international education. International student programs and efforts to increase the international nature of the curriculum were cited as the most important areas of international education by seven of those interview-ed. Other persons within each institution who are also involved in international education programs were identified. None of the colleges researched have developed evaluation procedures for international education programs. Faculty-related problems were most often cited by those interviewed as internal problems impeding international programs. Finally, the international education officers were optimistic regarding the future of internatioral education in Florida community colleges. More than one-third (37.5 percent) of Broward Community College 1977-78 graduates did not receive credit in a single international course. Student enrollment in international courses was found to vary according to student major.

This study empirically tests two new theories of international relations elaborated by Jack E. Vincent as "Relative Status-Field Theory" and "Distance Theory." The findings are compared with empirical results for R. J. Rummel's "Attribute," "Social Field," and "Status-Field" Theories. The cowman philosophical foundation of the theories is discussed, and the basic assumptions and expectations of each theory are specified. The cowman philosophical foundation of the theories is discussed, and the basic assumptions and expectations of each theory are specified. The data and methodological procedures necessary for testing the theories are considered. Suggestions for further theoretical development and testing are given. An elementary knowledge of statistics is required, although some knowledge of multi-variate analysis would be helpful.

The basic assumptions of this empirical theory are specified and the methodological considerations for transforming the sample data and testing the theory are presented in detail. Comparisons are made of the findings of this research to previous and similar empirical studies in international relations. The results of the tests cf Hodel II of Social Field Theory on 128 nation subjects and twenty international groups are presented and analyzed. Interpretations and policy implications are specified on the basis of these findings.

The objective of this thesis was to understand and model the patterns of internal migration to Southeast Florida in terms of spatial, demographic, social, economic, and climatic factors. First, a review of migration theory and research was made. Second, migration is described in terms of the total components of population change in Southeast Florida. Third, aggregate migration, i.e., migration flows, are described and then modeled in gravity model formulations. Fourth, the proportion of migrants, i.e., migration rates, are described and modeled using multiple linear regression and principle components analysis. Finally the results obtained are conceptualized in terms of the migrant's decision to migrate to Southeast Florida.

Show moreAs global interdependency becomes increasingly more apparent in our shrinking world, changing economic conditions draw people of many different cultures closer together. It is crucial that we develop knowledge and understanding of international cultures and countries to initiate and encourage reciprocal commercial and cultural exchange between local community colleges and the global community. Community colleges have an exceptional opportunity to provide effective leadership in order to implement and integrate international education (IE) concepts in their mission statement, goals and curriculum. The ultimate goal should be to institutionalize IE throughout the curriculum, faculty, staff, and student body of all community colleges. The success of enlarging global dimensions of community college students depends largely on the expressed commitment of strategic institutional leadership as wen as community support for such an undertaking. It is essential that a strong commitment by the board of trustees, the president, key academic leaders, and the faculty exists to implement international education concepts in the curriculum of the institution. The institution's mission and goals statement should reflect that view, and the board of trustees should promote that mission statement with a supportive policy statement. A director of international education is absolutely necessary to initiate, implement and maintain IE programs as well as funds for the development of the programs and for travel-related IE activities. A public information system will keep the institution and the community cognizant of the program's activities, and community advisory and support groups should be utilized for community input. This study is based upon an established demonstration project at the community college level through the Community Colleges for International Development (CCID). Levels of commitment of strategic leadership at CCID institutions were determined as well as levels of integration of IE concepts in curriculum at CCID member and affiliate institutions. An evaluation of the relationship between the two variables was undertaken to determine if strategies have been successfully implemented to achieve the stated goals of Community Colleges for International Development. An evaluation between the level of involvement of COD member and affiliates in IE programs and activities was also undertaken to determine whether there is a difference between the commitment and involvement of members and affiliates in implementing IE concepts in curriculum at their respective CCID institutions.

Show moreThis research focuses on cross-border acquisitions of emerging market multinationals (EM MNEs). Opposing theoretical perspectives of colonial ties (i.e., country ties between the acquiring and target firm countries, with the former being a colonized country and the latter being a colonizer country) are argued as predictors of EM MNE equity participation. Colonial tie is discussed as a source of legitimacy that can lower legitimacy threats (i.e., the likelihood of being deemed as illegitimate) via promoting similarities in informal institutions of the home and host countries. On the other hand, colonial tie is argued to be a historical event that can increase legitimacy threats due to perceived superiority of the colonizer. Chapter 1 contains an overview of and rationale for the study. Chapters 2-4 cover the literature review, theoretical development, contributions, and avenues for future research. This research fills the gap in literature by introducing colonization as a historical perspective with which to understand equity participation decisions.

Show moreExchange rate fluctuations create disparate types and degrees of exposure. Cash flows and net income fluctuate as result of exchange rate fluctuations. Consequently, shareholders, debtholders, and management closely monitor exposure. This dissertation investigates characteristics that explain the differential exposure of U.S.-based multinational corporations (MNCs) and examines conditions that influence exposure to shift over time. Operating characteristics that represent economic and accounting exposure are empirically studied to determine their impact on the overall exposure of MNCs. First, the results show that MNCs with imbalances in foreign currency inflows and outflows are more sensitive to exchange rate changes. A simple measure of European involvement is not adequate to assess the level of exposure. Second, it is found that the degree of export sales is a significant determinant of exposure. Third, there is strong support that accounting exposure is relevant. The translation effect on earnings is found to be significantly related to overall exposure. It is feasible that the dynamic nature of the international marketplace and MNC operations influence exposure to shift over time. First, the European Community Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) crisis is studied. The ERM crisis provides an opportunity to assess the effects on exposure when a tightly-controlled exchange rate regime becomes more relaxed. Using portfolio returns, U.S.-based MNCs operating in Europe experienced a positive shift in exposure, indicating returns are positively related to a strengthening dollar, following the onset of the ERM crisis. The strength of the dollar is another condition examined. Due to potential asymmetric responses, exposure may shift as the strength of the dollar changes. The asymmetric hedging hypothesis is not strongly supported while there is some support for the asymmetric competitive response hypothesis. The effects of repositioning on exposure are also studied. This analysis differs from the previous analyses of shifts in exposure since repositioning activities are predominantly under management's control. There is some evidence that exposure is a variable that continually changes as repositioning occurs. A subset of MNCs with returns that are negatively affected by a strong dollar displays time-varying exposure due to changes in their imbalance of foreign currency inflows and outflows.
