Show moreThe purpose of this study was to compare the aesthetic tastes of subjects with formal design training to the aesthetic tastes of the general population. The Graves Design Judgment Test was used as the Design Knowledge set of data in this correlational Ex post facto study. The visual art stimuli were chosen by a panel of art experts using dual 7 point bipolar scales for realism and design. Visual art stimuli were reproduced from various worldwide gallery and museum collections. A diverse set of art stimuli subject matter was used to minimize content preference by subjects. A multivariate analysis of variance, a correlation matrix, regression analysis, and principle components were used to statistically discern a significant difference between the groups studied. The group with a high cognate knowledge of design showed a preference for non-objective or abstract art more than the group without cognate design knowledge. Analysis of variance found a significant difference at the .05 level between the two groups' preferences for non-objective art but revealed no significant difference at the .05 level for either group's preferences for realism. The results of this study are consistent with earlier art preference research describing differences in trained and untrained subjects' preferences.

Show moreThe design of paper currency has attracted attention recently with the introduction of the Euro and American currency design modifications. New designs provide deterrence against counterfeiting, and, in some cases, accommodate the special needs of visually challenged individuals. Often aesthetics are given lower priority or ignored completely. This thesis is an examination of the author's motivations, inspirations, goals and design decisions involved in creating a set of paper currency bills that fit the high-tech, fast-paced and culturally diverse society that is twenty-first century America. The author incorporates a deep visual texture with American symbols and historical events illustrated by shape and shading alone---no color or line. Semiotics and visual metaphors are applied to convey meaning to abstract or complex concepts. Counterfeit deterrence features and features for use by visually challenged individuals are integrated into the design, thus producing a system of currency that is both functional and aesthetic.

Show moreArt integration as educational reform has been the focus of recent debate. The suggestion has been made that the arts can provide unique learning opportunities in other content areas. To provide empirical evidence for this added value of the arts in learning, this study investigated the efficacy of teaching science concepts in and through the visual arts by implementing an art integrated lesson. The study investigated the impact of an art integration to assist elementary level learners' visual perception so they could more accurately form mental models of the science ideas. The hypothesis suggests that participants in the art intervention who construct a three-dimensional representation of abstract science concepts will gain an increased understanding of those concepts. Specifically, students who work with parallel concepts in art and science to make and manipulate three-dimensional, kinetic models of the sun, earth, and moon will be able to more accurately visualize the relationships between these heavenly bodies. Fifth grade students participated in the study which was integrated into the regular curriculum. Seventy-six randomly selected students comprised the experimental group and participated in the art project. After the completion of traditional textbook and lecture presentation by the classroom teachers, a researcher developed Science Concept Test was administered to all fifth grade students. Statistically significant results indicated that the differences between the groups on the science concept test were due to the integration of the art intervention. These empirical data show significant differences between the group receiving the art intervention and the group receiving traditional classroom instruction, supporting the efficacy of the art integration model. In conclusion, the study supports the literature that suggests the efficacy of art integration partnerships as alternative avenues for presenting and representing knowledge. The study additionally supports the literature establishing the need for concrete modeling of science concepts at the elementary level. Furthermore, the study indicates the need for further investigation into attitudes toward art integration partnerships, the role of the arts in the culture of education, and the viability of instruments to assess conceptual understanding in the visual arts and in science.

Traditionally, an individual or small group of individuals underwrote the shortfall. Today, however, no individual or small group can afford to underwrite these massive deficits, and organizations must go to the appropriate "capital" markets for funding. These "capital" markets--individuals, foundations, corporations, and governments--now provide well over half of the funding for not-for-profit opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre companies, and the percentage rises each year. For the performing arts to survive, arts administrators must increase the amount of support from present contributors and find new sources of funding at a time when revisions in the IRS Tax Code conspire to discourage giving.

The question guiding the study was: What is the experience of creating visual art for a nurse? The aim of this descriptive study was to discover what is the nature of the experience of creating visual art as an aspect of nursing care from a nurse's perspective. Using van Manen's phenomenological approach, a description of the experience of creating visual art with patients occurred. Five essential themes emerged and express this experience. The unity of meaning for the experience is portrayed as A Healing Portrait of the Soul's Journey in Compassionate, Cocreative Relationships of Openness, Human Connectedness and Transformation. Implications for nursing inquiry, practice, and education are discussed.

This body of work uses both collage and a light-shadow installation to develop a narrative of place and time. My artwork focuses on deconstructing classical modes of representation through the lens of cartography and places an emphasis on personal experiences, narratives, and storytelling of place or locale. I am interested in road maps, water bodies, topography, shadows, and the various ways humans attempt to navigate or make sense of the natural world through lines and different mapping structures.

On June 3rd, 2010, I certainly was not aware of what was about to take place. I was in Kandahar, Afghanistan, and at this point in time my unit and I had been in country for five out of the twelve months of our deployment. An ear-splitting boom woke me up, and the smell of iron and blood was so strong it seemed to override my ability to focus on what was really happening. The sounds I heard were lowered and muffled and mostly pain-filled and anguished. Mine was often a voice that joined them....

The sounds I heard were lowered and muffled and mostly pain-filled and anguished. Mine was often a voice that joined them. Those cries could also change the course of a life. They are cries that, once heard, can never be erased from memory. I knew my comrades were down in the depths with me. I will never take anything for granted again. Honor and Chaos works across media to transform space and transport viewers. The exhibition incorporates sculptural forms of wire and scrap metal, dark ink drawings interrupted by spray paint, and salvaged plastics to immerse viewers in another place and time.

My process is documented through the experimental grounds of my sketchbooks. Originating from observational drawings of organic forms, my fascination with line quality and my desire for theatrical settings propelled these drawings to acquire a three dimensional presence. Through constructed book formats, staged micro-scenes, and photographs, I test my extracted, abstract forms in varying intimate environments. I control these worlds through scale, space and lighting, and I observe and record how they behave. I gather data through a methodical process that is infused with the empirical instincts I developed as a scientist. I express the resulting distilled organic forms in the most theatrical way I can invent.

The goal is to make people stop and think, even if only for a brief moment, about the social conventions that guide and control their daily lives. People become disconnected from one another and their environments through repetition, apathy, and a general obliviousness toward shared moments. Making people more attuned to these moments - essentially creating an opportunity to take a brief pause - as a step toward reconnection....
Show moreThis thesis is intended to disrupt society's social cruise control. The goal is to make people stop and think, even if only for a brief moment, about the social conventions that guide and control their daily lives. People become disconnected from one another and their environments through repetition, apathy, and a general obliviousness toward shared moments. Making people more attuned to these moments - essentially creating an opportunity to take a brief pause - as a step toward reconnection. Social conventions are unique in that they can exist without the consent of the involved parties; the existence of the convention is enough to demand conformity. While it is possible to find graphic design projects that offer some degree of interactivity to draw people into a relationship with a space, projects that encourage social relationships through acknowledgment between people are rare. This thesis will explore ways in which design acts as a catalyst for disruption, while also encouraging interaction and dialogue.

Gestural drawings of human and animal bodies in motion are woven into local landscape imagery that is printed with powdered charcoal through a silkscreen. Gestural drawings of human and animal bodies in motion are woven into local landscape imagery that is printed with powdered charcoal through a silkscreen. Using both additive and subtractive processes, the layering and erasure suggest loss, reclamation, and the nature of memory. The drawings are cut and provisionally reassembled into a cinematic sequence as if they are pieces of film being edited and spliced. This process shows an unfolding over time and involves listening to the rhythmic pacing of bodies morphing, decaying, birthing, or leaving. Time is not experienced as progress ; rather, the rearrangement of fragments allows for a continuous retelling of stories.

Show moreCurious to understand my fascination with and attraction to certain individuals who live and work in urban, often economically disadvantaged environments, my thesis exhibition explores properties of paint and image to develop a personal and compelling visual vocabulary that communicates as well as celebrates the strength, power, confidence and swag of these individuals. This work investigates the "face" people front in public in order to survive their situations. Representing individuals within my own community in Miami, these portraits help me come to terms with the way I too have adopted and performed identities of survival. Additionally, I want this work to make visual record of these compelling individuals rarely acknowledged within the history of art.
