Show moreSubjects in kindergarten, grade 2, and college were shown a videotape of a bicycle theft followed by a one month longitudinal study simulating the witness's experience during the pretrial phase of a criminal prosecutorial workup. Subjects were asked for free recall as well as for responses to nonleading and correct or incorrectly leading questions. Accuracy of free recall was high for all ages. Younger children were more susceptible to suggestive leading questions and adults were found to reject many of the "correctly" leading questions. Differences were found between answers to central and peripheral items and subjects were found to change their answers within the same interview in relation to age of the witness and centrality of the question.

Show moreIn this thesis work, hierarchical control techniques will be used for controlling a robotic manipulator. The hierarchical control will be implemented with fuzzy logic to improve the robustness and reduce the run time computational requirements. Hierarchical control will consist on solving the inverse kinematic equations using fuzzy logic to direct each individual joint. A commercial Micro-robot with three degrees of freedom will be used to evaluate this methodology. A decentralized fuzzy controller will be used for each joint, with a Fuzzy Associative Memories (FAM) performing the inverse kinematic mapping in a supervisory mode. The FAM determines the inverse kinematic mapping which maps the desired Cartesian coordinates to the individual joint angles. The individual fuzzy controller for each joint will generate the required control signal to a DC motor to move the associated link to the new position. The proposed hierarchical fuzzy controller will be compared to a conventional PD controller.

Show moreRobert Bly believes that every culture was once matriarchal and that everyone in those cultures enjoyed a mode of sentience he calls mother consciousness, in which compassion, ecstasy, a love for nature and an identity with the cosmos were naturally experienced. He suggests that this awareness is resurfacing in contemporary cultures and that the work of some poets illustrates that emergence. Theodore Roethke, I believe, is one of these poets. In "North American Sequence" he strives to return to that kind of awareness, but discovers that the obstacle is the egocentric personality, which continually asserts its psychical dominion out of fear that implicit in an identity with the cosmos is its own annihilation. It is not until the final poem, "The Rose," that the poet attains complete effacement of his ego and he abides in mother consciousness.

It deals with the factors that influence direct and indirect compensation and what special benefits and perquisites are made available to wage and management employees. A multiplicity of influences plays upon any determination of wages for the individual and the organization. These forces vary so in their impact that any static approach to wage criteria is misleading. The executive employee's compensation must contain both financial and non-financial elements designed to supply the urge, stimulus, and encouragement to improve profit performance and enhance the growth, expansion, and progress of the company. Since each form of compensation has both advantages and disadvantages they must be carefully weighed if they are to meet the short-term and long-term objectives of both the company and the employee.

Show moreDuring the past several decades, segmental construction using precast sections has evolved as a preferred design and construction method for bridges. The tendons used to hold the precast sections together are comprised of cables surrounded by a plastic duct filled with grout. Cracking of the tendon's protective plastic duct has been observed in several Florida bridges. An experimental investigation was performed to characterize the material properties of the high density polyethylene ducts used in the past and those being specified nowadays. The degree of cure of the resin, the results of three-point bending tests for unnotched and notched specimens, the coefficient of thermal expansion, and the deformation of a tendon as a function of temperature changes were studied. The effects of the grouting pressure and the void presence in the grout were quantified and the pressurization period was shown to affect significantly the pipe strain.

Show moreThis study deals with development, estimation, and application of a constrained welfare maximization model to the counties of the state of Florida. This model was suggested by James M. Henderson and is developed from microeconomic concepts. A survey of the literature concerning public expenditure begins the study. This is proceeded by the derivation of the regression equations which are derived from the concept of constrained welfare maximization. Estimation of the model involves aggregation into metropolitan counties and non-metropolitan counties of Florida county data and the subsequent categorization of counties. Empirical estimation of the desired coefficient enables the exumination of the involved elasticities and the endogenous variable response to changes in the exogenous variables.

An econometric model was chosen as the appropriate method for study as the said county is characteristic of a service based final demand economy. An underlying objective was to utilize data on income and employment variables available on a consistent bases from a Regional Economic Information System Data computer tape provided by the u.s. Department of Commerce 1983. These data distinguished among 11 industries and referred to the years 1967-1983. In conclusion the model shows that ordinary least squares estimation results were generally significant in the signas and goodness of fit. However evidence of positive serial correlation of the disturbances was detected and the results did not change substantially after applying the Cocran-Orcutt procedure.

Aging is a biological process that has many detrimental effects due to the accumulation of oxidative damage to key biomolecules due to the action of free radicals. Methionine sulfoxide reductase (Msr) functions to repair oxidative damage to methionine residues. Msr comes in two forms, MsrA and MsrB, each form has been shown to reduce a specific enantiomer of bound and free oxidized methionine. Methionine sulfoxide reductase (Msr) functions to repair oxidative damage to methionine residues. Msr comes in two forms, MsrA and MsrB, each form has been shown to reduce a specific enantiomer of bound and free oxidized methionine. Effects of Msr have yet to be studied in the major developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster despite the enzymes elevated expression during these stages. A developmental timeline was determined for MsrA mutant, MsrB mutant, and double null mutants against a wild type control. Results show that the Msr double mutant is delayed approximately 20 hours in the early/mid third instar stage while each of the single mutants showed no significant difference to the wild type. Data suggests that the reasoning of this phenomenon is due to an issue gaining mass.

Existing techniques and procedures within the field are applied to a specific itinerary for an archaeological study tour of Maya sites in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. Anthropological and archaeological goals for the tour are suggested and a blend of experiential and pedagogical teaching and assessment strategies are presented for use by travel studies coordinators who would attempt such a tour. A logistical lesson plan is presented for consideration in offering the study tour for academic credit.

Show moreCognitive theorists hypothesize two types of cognitive processes (e.g., automatic and effortful) which may influence human information processing. This thesis investigates age differences in when children use intralist associative relationships (thought to be automatic in nature) to identify other (categorical) relations. Use of conceptual/ categorical relations to organize recall is thought to be effortful in nature. Sixty children each from grades 3, 5, 7, and 9 were presented orally with lists of 20 words under free-recall instructions. Results provide support for the position that recall memory of young children is mediated primarily by associative rather than conceptual relationships. Also, partial support was obtained for the three stage model of the development of organization proposed by Bjorklund and Zeman (1982). However, the model's prediction of when children will optimally use associative relationships to identify categorized relations was inaccurate. These results indicate that older childrens' recall can be facilitated by automatic cognitive processes resulting in higher levels of clustering (organization) and recall.

The researcher of this work outlined Bolsonaro’s rhetorical rise, tested his rhetorical personae, “mito” and “Tropical Trump” based on the work of Ware in Linkugel (1982). No other foreign candidate mirrored Trump as much as he did. Bolsonaro also used US imagery in videos, borrowing images and terminologies found in the US culture. By analyzing his rhetorical strategies, the researcher identified Bolsonaro’s representative anecdote in his appeals that led to his rhetorical motivation as outlined by Burke’s dramatism.
