Over 15 years have passed since deregulation, and the industry still appears somewhat unsettled. Recent concerns of domestic carriers include downsizing of some hubs, and discussions of further consolidation of operations. Mergers may be the answer for airlines with shrinking markets within the US transportation system. This study examines the effect on network structure created by the merger of two carriers from the perspective of hub structures, accessibility and geographic coverage.

Watershed delineations in low topographic relief landscapes with canal networks require hydrography. This hypothesis was tested by utilizing digital elevation models (DEMs). Seven DEMs were processed using two automated delineation methods. Both methods include filling of localized sinks, but an enhanced method incorporated incremental "tipping" to provide flow direction. Seven DEMs were processed using two automated delineation methods. Both methods include filling of localized sinks, but an enhanced method incorporated incremental "tipping" to provide flow direction. In two watersheds studied, DEMs with only topography delineated watersheds within 24% and 84% of the manual delineation. With the addition of hydrography, including canals, both watersheds were delineated to within 85% and 92% of the manual delineation. Contrary to the assumption that tipping would improve delineation, tipping decreased the delineated area by removing a water flow path. Based on this research, DEM input data and delineation method strongly influence automated watershed delineations in low relief conditions.

Show moreTrip-based data can provide important information about travel patterns and travel characteristics of people. To handle this type of transportation movement data in GIS (Geographic Information Systems), a new data model is needed to incorporate different aspects of a transportation movement with its spatial properties. From the study presented in this thesis, an event-based data model for transportation movement data was developed with the concepts of object orientation, feature-based approach, and relative referencing methods. The implementation of this new data model with a prototype system shows the capability of this data model in handling transportation movement data. This data model has also improved the information retrieval ability provided by the current GIS data models.

To identify the types of spatial analysis which are desirable and appropriate to GIS, this thesis proposes a systematic 'building-blocks' approach for the identification of data models and spatial analytical tools to develop a flexible and powerful GIS spatial analysis and modeling environment. The building-blocks approach will be demonstrated in this thesis by examining a ground water flow model in MODFLOW, an SDA package designed specifically for this purpose. Procedures in MODFLOW will be disassembled into their primitive component functions, or building-blocks, which will then be sought out in ARC/INFO, representing a modern, general-purpose GIS. In the process, the levels of integration between GIS and SDA will be encountered and discussed.

Show moreAt present the current trip generation models used in the state of Florida to derive residential trip generation rates take into account three variables, dwelling type, auto ownership and household size. It is hoped that by examining geographic location, improvements can be made to the present Florida Standard Urban Transportation Modeling Structure (FSUTMS). To analyze the impact of geographic location, GIS technology will be used. GIS will aid the study in several ways. It will be used to identify urban centers and major highways within the study area and once this is accomplished, GIS will be used to create zones around the selected urban centers and the major highways. Finally GIS will be used to prepare the survey data for statistical analysis. In addition to looking at geographic location, the study will also examine whether certain lifestyle variables can influence residential trip rates within the study area. Throughout this study it is hoped that the predictive power of the Florida Standard Urban Transportation Modeling Structure can be improved.

Types of errors inherent in GIS data layers, and also errors that may be produced through the creation and manipulation of data layers have been identified. Definitions of these errors, and observations of how these errors occur have been offered. However, the majority of the research is qualitative. It is known that positional variation is produced through differing interpretations and generalization of points, lines, and polygons, but it is not known to what extent. This information would be extremely helpful in allowing the user of the information to fine tune the application, based on the accuracy of the data. Providing this type of information is the goal of this research. Quantitative analysis of the results of a series of experiments will give a numerical range of possible positional errors produced through database creation via aerial photo interpretation.

Eight sites (six wetland and two non-wetland) are studied. Using Landsat Multi-Spectral Scanner data, the fractal dimensions of the surface reflectance of the sites are calculated by the contour method. Values obtained are related to the type of wetland and the structure and processes that characterize that type of wetland. Forested wetlands were found to have the lowest fractal dimension. Mixed forested and non-forested had the highest. Marshy non-forested sites were higher than expected. Conclusions drawn are that physical characteristics of different wetlands result in measurable differences in fractal dimension. Fractals will be valuable in computer aided wetland identification in the future.
