Show moreThis study presents computer simulations directed to address the performance of a baseband Bluetooth system. These simulations help to understand the performance impairments experienced by the Bluetooth systems in the presence of external electromagnetic interference (EMI) and interference that arises from piconet neighbors. The simulation results show that the effect of small scale fading is an important factor that decides the performance of a Bluetooth system. Additionally, it is shown that the interference from piconet neighbors or the interference that stems from devices belonging to the same piconet can be reduced by using frequency-hoping and time synchronization improvised within the same piconets. The test simulations were performed using MatlabRTM and SimulinkRTM tools.

Show moreThis thesis is concerned with the evaluation of radar detection performance specific to the following target and background considerations: (1) Stochastical description and determination of the envelope statistics pertaining to radar clutter of the coastline regions. (2) Detection of low-altitude targets by sea-borne radars operating near the coastline; and (3) Fractal characterization of the ocean surface as viewed by a satellite-based radar altimeter. The first problem refers to the elucidation of the most appropriate statistics that would describe the relevant envelope distribution of the clutter caused by the dual region of sea and land of a typical coastline environment. In the second analysis, performance of the radar in terms of false-alarm and detection probabilities is predicted. The third effort addressed provides a fractal description of the ocean surface as viewed by a satellite based radar altimeter. By characterizing the ocean bed as a fractal surface, the extent to which the sea surface data contributes errors to the mispointing/autoboresight information is ascertained.

Show moreThis thesis refers to a research addressing the use of information-theoretic techniques in optimizing an artificial neural network (ANN) via a genetic selection algorithm. Pertinent studies address emulating relevant experiments on a test ANN (based on Hopfield's associative memory model) wherein the said optimization is tried with different sets of control parameters. These parameters include a new entity based on the concept of entropy as conceived in the field of information theory. That is, the mutual entropy (Shannon entropy) or information-distance (Kullback-Leibler-Jensen distance) measure between a pair of candidates is considered in the reproduction process of the genetic algorithm (GA) and adopted as a selection-constraint parameter. The research envisaged further includes a comparative analysis of the test results which indicate the importance of proper parameter selection to realize an optimal network performance. It also demonstrates the ability of the concepts proposed here in developing a new neural network approach for pattern recognition problems.

This study focuses on: (1) Estimating CDV arising from multiplexing/switching for both constant bit rate (CBR) and variable bit rate (VBR) traffics via priority allocation based simulations. (2) Developing an information-theoretics based technique to get an insight of the combined BER-induced and multiplexing/switching-induced CDVs in ATM networks. Algorithms pertinent to CDV statistics are derived and the lower and upper bounds of the statistics are obtained via simulations in respect of CBR and VBR traffics. Ascertaining these bounds is useful in the cell admission control (CAC) strategies adopted in ATM transmissions. Inferential remarks indicating the effects of traffic parameters (such as bandwidth, burstiness etc.) on the values of the statistical bounds are presented, and scope for further work are presented.

Specifically, the problem addressed here refers to using a "fast-convergent" ANN for the purpose indicated. The underlying principle of fast-convergence is that, the data presented in training and prediction modes of the ANN is in the entropy (information-theoretic) domain, and the associated annealing process is "tuned" to adopt only the useful information content and discard the posentropy part of the data presented. To demonstrate the efficacy of the research pursued, a feedforward ANN structure is developed and the necessary transformations required to convert the input data from the parametric-domain to the entropy-domain (and a corresponding inverse transformation) are followed so as to retrieve the output in parametric-domain. The fast-convergent or fast-computing ANN (FC-ANN) developed is deployed to predict the packet-transit performance across the Internet. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Show moreThis thesis is concerned with an outline survey on the modern aspects of asynchronous transmission mode (ATM) telecommunication; also considered are certain specific issues such as the performance characteristics of ATM-based telecommunication networks under fluctuating workloads. Estimation of the stochasticity of the jitter associated with the cell-delay arising out of buffering within the network as well as due to signal-to-noise considerations which induce bit-errors and eventually lead to cell-losses manifesting as delay(s) in the cells being transmitted, is also addressed as a part of this thesis efforts. Relevant theoretical models are proposed, algorithms are developed and simulations are done on the above considerations. Based on these efforts, inferential conclusions are drawn and discussed. Scope for future research and developments towards engineering design of softwares suitable for practical applications by ATM networking planners and traffic forecasters is indicated. Merits and shortcomings of the models are proposed and algorithmic approaches pursued in the present study are also specified with relevant discussions.

Reticles are used commonly in these passive homing seekers to modulate the incoming radiation from the target. Since signals are invariably corrupted by noise, the analysis of signal-to-noise characteristics of a passive homing system is crucial in elucidating its performance towards successful homing on the target. The objective of this thesis refers to the analysis of a passive homing system which employs a frequency modulated reticle. Studies pertinent to the feasibility aspect of using electrochromic, nonmoving reticles also constitute a part of the present study. In essence, the effort addressed in this work are concerned with the performance analysis and feasibilities considerations in using nonmoving reticles in passive homing systems in lieu of conventional rotating reticles.

It refers to the elucidation of the electromagnetic properties of such composite materials when used in engineering applications. The analytical studies refer to the extension of the existing stochastical mixture permittivity formulations to characterize magnetic mixture materials as well as chiralic mixture media. In both cases the mixture medium is presumed to consist of a host (receptacle) and dispersed particulates (inclusions). The effects of particulate shape in both chiralic and achiralic systems are also considered. Further, the concept of particulate polarization in deciding the permittivity and/or permeability characteristics of orderly-textured mixture media is addressed so as to determine the electromagnetic properties of such orderly-textured media. Application potentials of the present studies in the design of electromagnetic composites are indicated and the scope for the future research is portrayed.

Show moreATM multiplexing, (which is essentially a statistical multiplexing process with priority constraints) leads to a departure pattern of cells on the trunk (or bearer) line, characterized by the profiles of incoming traffics at the multiplexer. Such profiles are decided by the bit-rate variations and workload fluctuations of the associated sources, namely voice, data and video of the cells. Bit rate statistics of incoming traffic with priority constraints decide the clustered and/or non-clustered epochs of cells on the multiplexed fine. If the incoming traffic is delay-sensitive, it gets the priority in the multiplexing strategy and the associated cells inbiting no clusters; whereas, the non-isochronous traffics (facing low priority flow service) induce stagnation in the queue and pose eventually a clustered structure of cells on the trunk line. Workload fluctuation is largely application-dependent. The corresponding teletraffic statistics would also show deviations in the performance from the mean-field regime. In essence, the cell-stream departing from ATM multiplexer would exhibit statistics of deviations. In the present study, the associated delay parameter is considered and modeled under constant and variable bit rate conditions for fluctuating workloads. Mean-field theory is applied in modeling constant bit rate traffics. For variable and bursty rate transmissions, it is shown that the delay is governed by a non-homogeneous compound Poisson process. Relevant statistical bounds are established via large-deviation theory. Determination of the bounds of ATM cell-delay variations is important in developing call admission control algorithms.

Show moreThis research addresses a specific class of electromagnetic problems concerning the radiation and scattering of high frequency electromagnetic waves at the surfaces of composite materials. With the advent of need-based developments in electromagnetic material technology, a research niche has stemmed to analyze the interaction of electromagnetic energy with different versions of composite materials used mostly as surface materials such as in radar-stealth applications. Mixture-dielectrics, mixture magnetic materials, textured electromagnetic composites with matrix layers of lossy dielectric/magnetic materials, chiralic media, active surface materials etc. are a few emerging candidates of viable composites being considered in the state-of-the-art engineering electromagnetics. Specific to these materials, the analyses pertaining to electromagnetic radiation and scattering problems require a unique, approach vis-a-vis the heterogeneous properties of the composite material surfaces involved. Presently, the proximity of such surfaces is characterized and duly accounted for, by a mutual immittance formulation based on the Monteath's field compensation theorem. Using the relevant theoretical considerations, electromagnetic plane wave and/or focused beam radiation due to an aperture, conducting patch on flat and curved surfaces and scattering by an object coated with a composite material are elucidated. Also, an experimental method of evaluating the surface immittance is indicated. Theoretical computations are validated by comparing the results with those obtained via other methods. Some experimental results are furnished in support of the theoretical approaches presented.

The thesis addressed thereof provides details on the fundamentals of sensing glucose content noninvasively across a finger. The underlying principle of biosensing refers to detecting the change in the dielectric property of blood with differential changes in the glucose influx in the finger by sensing microwave (such as 2450 MHz) absorption and/or reflection so as to assay the glucose content of interest. Preliminary experimental and theoretical results are presented and discussed.

The qualifying attributes, which allow such a characterization are three-folded: (i) Size of the network supporting massive traffics; (ii) heterogeneous characteristics of the traffics constituted by a mix of data, voice and video transmissions; and (iii) quality of service (QOS) considerations as met by a variety resources. Commensurate with the scope of the research indicated above, the underlying principles of information-theoretics are adopted as the background concept of the studies performed and a complexity-metric is defined via entropy considerations. Hence, the following aspects of modern telecommunications are studied: The first one refers to using entropy as a metric to assess the traffic characteristics in ATM telecommunications. Relevant heterogeneous traffic is modeled and analyzed in terms of the complexity-metric. Impairment considerations (such as cell-losses) due to queueing and/or finite-buffer sizes are estimated via information-loss specifications. The results are compared with those of conventional queueing-theoretics based analysis. The second consideration uses the complexity-metric to implement the so-called call admission control (CAC) in ATM transmissions. The complexity-metric is considered as a decision-theoretic parameter and a fuzzy inference engine is constructed to facilitate a real-time CAC. The third contribution of this research is pertinent to the development of an artificial neural network (ANN) implemented to perform CAC using the complexity-metric as the training parameter characterizing the input calls, which compete to get admission into the network. The real-time performance of the ANN in such CAC implementations is demonstrated. The fourth effort of this research is directed to portray the cybernetic perspectives of a complex system. Again, the interacting structure of the technology and economics of telecommunication systems is considered and the associated complexity is elucidated in terms of the entropy profile of the subsystems. Hence, optimized (or suboptimal) alternative designs of a network based on technoeconomical considerations are obtained. This dissertation also includes relevant literature survey and background details. It concludes with a discussion on the results and inferences on the research carried out. Further, the scope for future study is identified and open-questions are enumerated.

Show moreThe research proposed and elaborated in this dissertation is concerned with the development of new and smart techniques for subchannel allocation in the asymmetric digital subscriber lines (ADSLs). The ADSL refers to a class of access technology adopted currently in modern telecommunications to make use of the available channel capacity on the twisted copper-wires, which exist in the "last-mile" between the central office and subscribers. This available spectrum on the voice grade copper-lines is judiciously used to transport broadband data over the last mile regime. For this purpose, the channel capacity on the access lines is segmented in subchannels and the traffic to be transported is placed on the subchannels matching the bit-rates of the traffic to the subchannel capacity (as dictated by Hartley-Shannon law). The available subchannels for downstream and upstreams are of different extents (640 kbps for upstream and 9 Mbps for downstream); and, hence are qualified as asymmetric transports. Relevant to the subchannel allocation as above, the specific research, carried out can be enumerated as follows: (1) Development of a subchannel allocation metric (SAM) on the basis of information-theoretic considerations and duly accounting for noise/interference effects on the access lines and BER-based information-impairments on the trunks (feeding the access lines); (2) Use of SAM as an algorithmic support to train an artificial neural network (ANN), which is facilitated at the ADSL modem performing subchannel allocation. A new version of ANN training (and subchannel allocation prediction) strategies is developed by implementing the ANN operation in the entropy-plane. This technique allows a fast convergence of the ANN compatible for telecommunication transports. The incorporation of ANN in the modem renders the subchannel allocation smart; (3) Fuzzy considerations are also included in the ANN indicated above and operation of ADSL modem is then tuned to function as an intelligent neuro inference engine in its efforts towards subchannel allocation; (4) ATM support on ADSL lines is investigated and a scheme for allocating the permanent and switched virtual circuits (supporting ATM specified traffic) on the subchannels of access lines is developed. Relevant call-blocking probabilities are assessed; (5) Lastly, the EMI/RFI, and crosstalks on access lines are studied in the framework of practical considerations and mitigatory efforts are suggested thereof. Simulated results using data commensurate with practical aspects of ADSL transport are furnished and discussed. Background literature is comprehensively presented chapterwise and scope for future work is identified via open questions in the concluding chapter.

The relevant tasks undertaken refer to analytical modeling, experimental studies and simulations pertinent to the performance considerations of the test systems subjected to EMI/RFI influences. The following can be enumerated as the specific research endeavors pursued and completed: (1) Identification of performance implications in the Bluetooth(TM) and CDPD wireless transmissions subjected to EMI/RFI ambients. (2) A comprehensive presentation on the system description, performance requirements, protocol issues and operational environments of the two wireless technologies under study. (3) Development of analytically tractable models, which describe the extent of EMI/RFI on the Bluetooth(TM) operations and provide expressions to compute the transmission impairments involved in terms of the associated packet losses. (4) Modeling of CDPD performance and deducing the statistics of data packets seizing the free AMPS channels. The associated results offer compatible simulations to deduce the data packet blocking probability. The enhancement of such blocking caused by any impulse-like noise invading the system is also modeled. (5) Proposals for methods towards EMI solutions through adopting novel shielding in the wireless systems. The aforesaid efforts are comprehensively addressed supplemented with appropriate background details and literature survey. In conclusion, the scope of the present study is discussed and possible open-questions for future study are identified.

The traditional expressions for these probabilities that are reported in the literature, are deduced only on the basis of call arrival statistics applied to RF links between base station (BS) and the mobile unit (MU). However, such radio links inevitably suffer from fading. These channels are normally modeled by appropriate probability density functions (pdfs) of the faded signal envelope. Rayleigh, Rician and Nakagami-m distributions are popularly considered in depicting such fading channel characteristics. The traditional (queueing-theoretic) based estimation of handoff probabilities does not account for the hysteresis-specific handoff statistics in the relevant fading channels. This is in contrary to the reality, inasmuch as fading is an inherent part of RF channels in mobile communications. The present study offers a tractable method of combining queuing-theoretic (call arrival) statistics and the hysteresis-crossing statistics of a RSS metric so as to obtain proper expressions for new and handoff call handoff probabilities. The (upper and lower) bound specified spread of the handoff probabilities indicates that care should be exercised in resource allocation efforts with a margin. To the best of the knowledge of the author, this research exercise is new and has not been reported elsewhere in open literature.

The present study addresses provisioning economically-budgeted and optimally-engineered bit rates (EBRs) in implementing IPTV technology in the local-loop via copper-pairs using the so-called (ADSL2/ADSL2+) technology (with high-speed/large bandwidth considerations plus copper-bonding for bandwidth sharing capabilities). Also studied is the way to extend the backhaul transport of IPTV on copper-lines (plus any other local-loop transmissions that may co-exist) onto an "all-optical" trunk of the inter-office facilities (IOFs) in the edge/core network cloud of the telcos. A model of a core network topology is analyzed for traffic considerations so as to decide on blocking probability at a specified egress node under different conditions of burstiness. The problems posed are analyzed via computations/simulations on Matlab(TM) (v6.5). Inferential remarks are gathered, conclusions are drawn and open-questions yet to be researched are indicated.

Type-I and Type-II diabetes with relevant clinical details are simulated. Further, a control strategy is introduced in order to simulate the control of exogenous insulin pump. Simulated results are consistent with available clinical data. Living systems in general, exhibit both stochastical and deterministic characteristics. Activities such as glucose metabolism traditionally modeled do not include stochastical properties, nor that they are viewed in the large framework of complex system with explicit interaction details. Currently, a complexity system model is developed to describe the glucose metabolism related activities. The simulation results obtained thereof illustrate the bounding domain of variations in some clinically observed details.
