Podophyllotoxin has been under extensive biochemical investigation since the discovery of its biological activity as a strong microtubule destabilizing mitotic agent. Although these antineoplastic compounds have shown significant activity as cancerous cell growth inhibitors, they lack selectivity and are thus extremely toxic to healthy cells. This has led to a recent interest in the synthesis of Podophyllotoxin analogues in hopes of optimizing the biological selectivity and potency of these semi-synthetic derivatives. The objective of my research in the Roche group is to generate a library of these derivatives for subsequent biological assays to determine their potential as chemotherapeutic agents. In total I have synthesized 22 Podophyllotoxin analogues. Of these 22 derivatives, 14 have been biologically evaluated and 4 were observed to possess promising anti-cancer activity and are currently undergoing further evaluation.

Abstract/Description

Quantifying swimming kinematics of fishes often occurs in a lab setting using flumes, water treadmills, to examine movement. These methods rely on researchers to pick the animals swimming speed. We have been focusing on volitional kinematics in the lab where we quantify swimming as determined by the fish. However, our volitional swimming experiments are still limited to the space available in a lab setting. In this study, we examine swimming kinematics of black tip sharks (Carcharhinus...

These methods rely on researchers to pick the animals swimming speed. We have been focusing on volitional kinematics in the lab where we quantify swimming as determined by the fish. However, our volitional swimming experiments are still limited to the space available in a lab setting. In this study, we examine swimming kinematics of black tip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) during their annual winter aggregations in South Florida. Using an aerial drone, video of sharks can be obtained through noninvasive methods in the wild, and examined frame-by-frame using the Loggerpro software. We track points along the shark’s midline to examine body curvature, tailbeat frequency, tailbeat amplitude, and whole-body swimming velocity. These data represent the first time we have been able to quantify kinematics in a free-swimming shark in the wild.

Abstract/Description

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometers and gyroscopes are small scale sensors that measure changes in linear acceleration and rotational velocity, respectively. They are fabricated using electronic circuit techniques such as etching and deposition. MEMS motion sensors can be used in an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that can be integrated with the Global Positioning System (GPS) to make a navigation system that is more accurate than each system alone. Show moreMicroelectromechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometers and gyroscopes are small scale sensors that measure changes in linear acceleration and rotational velocity, respectively. They are fabricated using electronic circuit techniques such as etching and deposition. MEMS motion sensors can be used in an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that can be integrated with the Global Positioning System (GPS) to make a navigation system that is more accurate than each system alone. However, since MEMS-based IMUs are inherently noisy, we must overcome inaccuracies caused by the integration of random noise to find position. Accuracy can be increased by applying digital filters to the data before integration. Comparing the success of finite impulse response (FIR) filters and infinite impulse response (IIR) filters, we found that even though our highest order FIR filter yielded the most accurate position, it was limited by an offset bias in the accelerometer signal and a time delay in the determined position.

To Be Decided begins where most stories end, with the death of a young man named Zander. The story follows his journey into the afterlife where he meets a goddess of death, a young girl who is more than she seems and some other colorful characters along the way. The story addresses ideas of grief, what it means to be alive and what comes after. Heavy moments in the story are broken up by lighthearted comedy and moments of friendship between characters. The story addresses ideas of grief, what it means to be alive and what comes after. Heavy moments in the story are broken up by lighthearted comedy and moments of friendship between characters. The main character of the story Zander must decide if he wishes to rest peacefully after his sudden death or enter into the supernatural world of reapers and shadows. Helping him through his journey is a reaper named Ophelia, her familiar Mimi and his own ghastly partner Tadpole.

There are several different normative ethical frameworks one can use for determining or measuring the value of a human life, including deontological and utilitarian theories on how we ought to make decisions regarding which lives have more value. Show moreThere are several different normative ethical frameworks one can use for determining or measuring the value of a human life, including deontological and utilitarian theories on how we ought to make decisions regarding which lives have more value. I intend to evaluate these frameworks and apply them to the problem of self driving cars, which pose both ethical and legal issues. These cars will have to be programmed to make decisions in the case of emergency situations, and the question of who and how we should be programming these vehicles to best promote the common good is a difficult one. I will argue that utilitarianism is the best way to make decisions in the case of choosing between 2 lives, and that self-driving cars should be programmed to do the least damage possible, even if that means sacrificing the life of the passenger. In addition, I will argue for the programming of self-driving cars to be uniform across manufacturers, with liability generally falling on the manufacturer in cases of injury or malfunction.

Online tools are a cost effective format for education, and there is an increasing need for them as the use of virtual activities rises, with personal computers in classrooms and children's homes becoming more commonplace. Circuit Builder has three sections: electricity, conductors and insulators, and resistors. Each section begins with a video explanation followed by an interactive simulated circuit building environment. Circuit Builder was designed using Unity 2D, with scripts in C#, then incorporated into an HTML page along with videos. Throughout the design process, I center on children’s perspectives and abilities. Circuit Builder contributes to the field of asynchronous online STEM education, and could be used as an independent computer-based activity in an elementary school classroom or afterschool program.

During the Korean War, POWs within UN POW camps participated in riots and mass-demonstrations, as anxieties over repatriation increased. Not all POWs who were against repatriation were against Communism and not all POWs who wanted repatriation were radical Communists. Not all POWs who were against repatriation were against Communism and not all POWs who wanted repatriation were radical Communists. However, almost all Chinese and Koreans living in post-World War II East Asia during this period experienced increasing pressure to pick a side. The US, North Korea, South Korea, China, and Taiwan all manipulated the POWs’ fight over repatriation to support specific ideologies and legitimize new regimes. Regardless of whether a POW was ideologically motivated, the POW issue was definitely a direct result of the Cold War mentality which perpetuated the recent civil wars in China and Korea. Thus, the appalling level of POW violence in the UN camps revealed how the Cold War ideological struggle was deeply complicated by the lingering civil wars in China and the Korean peninsula.

Instead, it is a substance which can be extracted and consumed like a hallucinogenic drug, immersing consumers in a vivid and immediate past whose physical effects linger long after the images of that memory disappear. Instead, it is a substance which can be extracted and consumed like a hallucinogenic drug, immersing consumers in a vivid and immediate past whose physical effects linger long after the images of that memory disappear. For Paul Mendez, these memories offer an escape from a present defined by grief, while former professional football prospect Calvin Long seeks to reconnect with a past too long stained by regret. For law school student Kara Douglas, selling erotic memories is simply a business transaction—that is until she considers removing the parts of her past that stand in the way of the future she desires. Set in the rolling hills of contemporary Tallahassee, Into Memory explores the relationships that we maintain, for better or worse, with our pasts and what we will do to avoid, restore, or change them.

Abstract/Description
-
The following is a collection of personal essays exploring identity during the transformative period of the author's early adult life. It also examines themes of home, inheritance, grief, and loss of faith. It has elements of both humor and drama highlighted through unusual forms and elements of voice. It is about growing up and going home, mixing old traditions with new ones, bringing new insights to old problems, and about having faith, but always on one's own terms.
