This war led to laws that legitimized slavery and the impressment of Anglo sailors and left behind an insurrectionary ideology that American colonists adapted during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, this ideology inspired the Constitution and later inspired slave revolts, and sailor mutinies for civil liberties won during the Revolution. As the capitalist economy grew and ensnared the new nation, this ideology entered reformer communities. American law relied on lawyers, jurists, and politicians to balance liberty, property, and a racial divide. White sailors did not face racialized slavery but experienced exploitation through American law. This relationship's intersection of economy and identity helps explain why sailors' rights helped reform American law and emancipate the slave.

Show moreThe two and a half decades following the ending of the American Revolution was filled with change. The formation of government and the ratification of the Constitution at the state and federal levels created spaces where topics were hotly debated. Specifically, religion and its role in the United States government generated much discussion: how much power should religious institutions have within this new country and should this new United States have an established religion? Historians have dissected and analyzed these topics for years. But, how informed were Americans during this period of these conversations which created the bedrock of American government? One conduit which was generally available to the masses was the newspaper. The creation of news and the dissemination of information to the expanding United States created a unique platform for newspaper printers and editors alike, touching all levels of society and politics. Using newspapers printed during this period and focusing specifically on the state of Virginia, this thesis analyzes newspaper content between 1784 – 1808 as a general guide as to what the Virginia common persons would have been exposed to regarding separation of church and state and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. Based on the saturation of religion in society at this time, it is surprising to find that Americans were only minimally interested in the separation of church and state discussions happening in Virginia and the greater United States. It was when religious topics shifted into perceived morals and ethics, political campaigns, or the potential for land control through glebe land ownership that Virginians expressed their opinions and reactions to the separation of church and state.

Show moreThis thesis is an international comparative analysis on the women pilots of Britain’s Air Transport Auxiliary, the Soviet Union’s Aviation Group 122, and the United States’ Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, Women’s Flying Training Detachment, and the Women Airforce Service Pilots during World War II. Women pilots in these groups were motivated by three different factors in each country to aid the war effort and that determination was a common thread among these groups that drove them to serve their countries’ militaries. What made the pilots’ efforts stand out was that they offered the Allies an advantage over the Axis Powers in terms of utilizing an additional workforce. Unfortunately, these women are widely unrecognized for this advantage and are brushed aside. It is important to recognize the significance of how these women impacted the Allies socially and militarily, and this work aims to expand the discussion in World War II studies.

Even though the careers of other famous Muslim warriors during the Crusading period tend to overshadow his accomplishments, Zengi had a remarkable career which provided him the opportunities to advance his own agenda within the larger Saljuq political structure. This structure allowed Zengi the opportunity to establish power within the Levant (modern day Syria, Iraq). Zengi succeeded in further stabilizing his own military position through manipulation of both political relationships and religious practices, specifically the calling for and waging of jihad, both of which allowed him to build toward developing his own independence from the Saljuq sultanate.

While the 21st century has seen these three cities bring in new investment and attractions, those developments may hurt lower-income and minority residents as rents rise.

Show moreDirt, Rust, and Non-Girl Stuff explores identity, mental health, and tradition. Considering the customs of my Cuban heritage, I choose materials and processes that reflect conventions related to gender identity, expression, and craft. These subjects are represented via assemblages that exist as stand-alone sculptures and installations. Each piece is composed of materials and objects chosen based on their physical characteristics and associations to craft or notions of traditional gender norms. The work hints to the viewer through metaphors created by material choice, found object associations, and the placement of each element. Each fragment of material represents a part of my identity. The porcelain acts as a metaphor for my body, often breaking, cracking, and shattering. Its fragility requires mending, stitching, and repair to become something or someone else. The crochet elements reference the women's gender roles and femininity that my parents yearned for me to exhibit. The metal tools and rusted objects are representative of the more masculine roles I took on to fulfill my father's need for a son. The work often exhibits the precarity, the needed repairs, or additions of femininity to the otherwise masculine materials to turn a too masculine body into a more feminine one. The arrangements are not motivated by order or beauty but by the tension caused by the divide between who I am and whom I am expected to be.

By examining material from U.S. diplomatic document collections, my research intervenes in the historiography of the Alliance for Progress by demonstrating the failures of U.S. policy in Venezuela during the Latin American Cold War. Although the United States supported the democratic government of Rómulo Betancourt politically, it hamstrung his government economically. The Kennedy administration at first provided loans for economic development to Venezuela, though they quickly eliminated this aid and began prioritizing military assistance as the most efficient way of supporting Betancourt’s government. More importantly, by continually limiting imports of Venezuelan oil into the United States, both the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations hurt Venezuela’s economy and caused Betancourt to face a crisis of legitimacy as his capacity to manage the nation’s natural wealth came into question.

In his 76 years, he attempted to articulate a vision of American society as a raceblind meritocracy where the rights of individual citizens were safeguarded by a state they directed in common regardless of race, class, or gender. This thesis traces the intellectual path Stevens blazed through politics, economics, and religion as he tried to craft a version of American liberalism equal to the fundamental problems of racism and economic inequality exposed by the Civil War, also treating his unorthodox personal and religious lives. It concludes with a survey of radical remembrances and reassessments of Stevens by activists seeking to follow in his footsteps and remold American society between the counter-revolution of 1877 and the appearance of Eric Foner's revisionist opus Reconstruction: Americas Unfinished Revolution.

Show moreMy fascination with the human figure remains a prominent part of my work as a familiar and complex path to formalist traditions. But as I have sought to expand my engagement with representational figuration, I look towards themes of universal emotions and conditions - grief, remembrance, anger, affection and resolve. Within this, I often allude to socio-political content, art historical references or personal experiences. In integrating representational figuration with a contemporary approach, I incorporate techniques of drawing, painting and printmaking into narrative formats while preserving the figure as the protagonist. I lean into gestural lines, expressive marks and abstract color fields to breathe life into the work and enhance the emotive context. I embrace the intuitive process as I believe it reflects and retains a certain spiritual spontaneity and response. Recently, I have experienced deep loss. It is the grief associated with this that has informed these pieces. Grief is a process that can be present, historical, anticipatory or prolonged. I have been stricken by a wide range of losses –personal, societal, political and cultural - death of loved ones, risk of severe limitations to civil liberties and bodily autonomy, global wars and violence, xenophobia, brutal attacks on democratic ideals and even the inevitable passage of time have precipitated my personal and visceral grief.

The state governments - and governors – redeemers designed in the 1870s and 1880s still governed Texas and Florida well into the twenty first century. Reconstruction directly shaped the size and scope of these modern-day state executives.

Eisenhower instead sought to maintain U.S. influence among a coalition of Middle Eastern conservative governments operating in a U.S. led regional military alliance. The crisis forced the President to reconcile his foreign policy objectives with the political and cultural reality of the region and prompted a major foreign policy reassessment in which Eisenhower turned away from top-down international alliance building and instead, worked to address the obvious need to court public opinion in the Arab world.

To show women’s strength and resiliency, the thesis imagines an immersive experience that combines Iranian visual culture aesthetics with modern storytelling techniques. It promotes Graphic Design as a tool for social change. It adds to continuing conversations about women’s empowerment, cultural reclamation, and social advancement in Iran and, by extension, globally. The thesis exhibition envisions Graphic Design as a powerful tool for reshaping gender norms in Iranian society. It was inspired by the courage of women in movements such as Woman, Life, Freedom, which started in 2022 in Iran and other countries like Turkey, Syria, and Iraq, which demonstrate their fight for gender equality, self-determination, and the liberation of women from patriarchal and oppressive systems.

Show moreThe main focus of this dissertation is a discussion of how an artist uses her dance bodily knowledge to develop in a static art form a more bodily sense of movement. For this purpose this dissertation examines four clay sculptures by contemporary artist Mary Frank. The analysis suggests that the uncharacteristic sense of movement displayed in these works derives from her experiential knowledge of dance. This sense of movement is achieved through the considered assemblage and inextricable relationship between Frank’s dance bodily knowledge (body knowledge a dancer acquires through years of dance practice) and the manipulation of clay, the plastic medium she uses to create these forms. The study reveals that Frank’s ceramic assemblages of organic shapes resembling a figure could be related to somatic awareness of arms, legs, torso, hips, and head that dancers experience while dancing. Similarly, the fluid quality of her ceramic assemblages and their seamless coexistence with the environment can be correlated to the proprioceptic sensibilities (the reception of stimuli produced within the organism by movement or tension) that a dancer’s body senses as it navigates through the air and across the ground managing the pull of gravity. These findings are developed through a discussion of the philosophic theories on bodily knowledge (knowing in and through the body) by Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michael Polanyi, Edward Casey, Pierre Bourdieu, and Richard Shusterman, as well as the philosophic theories on dance bodily knowledge (my own term) developed by Barbara Mettler, Maxine Sheets-Johnstone, and Jaana Parviainen. In addition, Mary’s sculptures are compared to traditionally built sculptures to illustrate the bodily sensory quality of the sense of movement of her structures. Although the scope of this study is limited to the application of dance bodily knowledge onto sculpture, perceived through the clay sculptures of Mary Frank, this research adds to the debate on the interrelationships between dance education and the arts, the body and institutions of learning, and the body and society. It suggests that dance practice and introspection of one’s body movement affects how one perceives the world around us and therefore how one reacts and expresses oneself on to the world.

I ended with introspective installation work that paralleled the themes I was working with at the start of my graduate experience that shows my evolution from being a child continually bounced around from one family member to another, to being the confidant of my mother and holding her darkest secrets, to feeling alone and unloved, to finally beginning to heal and accept who I am.
