Roymond Vernon (1966) and Seev Hirsch (1967) systematically put forth the product cycle approach in an effort to increase understanding of trade theory and introduce dynamics into trade. Show moreRoymond Vernon (1966) and Seev Hirsch (1967) systematically put forth the product cycle approach in an effort to increase understanding of trade theory and introduce dynamics into trade. One of the model's major premises is that a country which has a strong competitive position in a particular industry at a given point in time may well lose this position when the industry enters into a new phase. This approach has been accepted as an established theory though it still remains inadequately tested. The television industry is the largest segment of the consumer electronics industry which has been frequently cited as an evidence to support the product cycle theory. The whole life of monochrome television in the United States was nicely explained by the product cycle theory. But it seems that the development of color television does not tell the same story.

Show moreHuman knowledge is acknowledged as critically important to economic growth and prosperity. Economists focus on the past few decades’ emergence of a knowledge-based economy greatly dependent on individual-level knowledge. Knowledge is a key resource of many organizations, and the need for an educated workforce is believed to facilitate the creation, share, and use of firm-level knowledge going forward. An economy where knowledge is the main asset is very different from traditional production systems that depend on tangible assets. These tangible assets often rely upon scarce resources such as minerals, thereby forcing price fluctuations and potential disruptions in inventory and sales. Logistics and supply chain issues can dwindle as we have experienced during the recent pandemic. However, when knowledge is the firm’s main asset, the firm’s intangible asset will not decrease as sales increase. Knowledge also does not spoil or dwindle over time. Instead, knowledge will grow and evolve, and as the philosopher Aristotle once stated, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. The fact that knowledge as the main asset does not decrease as a result of production makes the knowledge economy an interesting phenomenon to study and to understand.

- The economic impact of the proposed movement of the Coastal Construction Control Line in Palm Beach County.
- Creator
- Correia, Michele Edwards., Florida Atlantic University, Rhodd, Rupert, College of Business, Department of Economics
- Abstract/Description
-
An Economic Impact Statement was developed in accordance with section 120.54 Florida Administrative Code to determine the costs and benefits associated with the proposed movement of the Palm Beach County Coastal Construction Control Line. A benefit/cost model was developed to measure the available data. The benefit/cost analysis will be provided to policy makers as an aid to clarifying the net costs and benefits of the proposed rule amendment on society.

Analyses are made of Miami Beach, Florida - once a wealthy resort community - and Palm Beach, Florida - which has maintained its status as a wealthy resort community. By comparing Miami B~ch results with Palm Beach results, the analyses determine whether Miami Beach's preservation decisions, which pertained to its character and residential nature, have resulted in an adverse impact on its economic vitality. The type of analysis used is a time series analysis. Time series analyses of each community's individual tax base are conducted to determine whether age has had a positive or negative impact on the community. The analyses showed that in Miami Beach, as time passed, the tax base declined; yet in Palm Beach, as time passed, the tax base improved. Given the analyses, together with the history of the communities, it is concluded that massive reinvestment in new buildings did not result in an enhanced economic vitality in Miami Beach.

The main emphasis of this thesis is the Code's "districts of critical state concern". Florida, in enacting the Environmental Land and Water Management Act in 1972, used the ALI Code as a model for its "areas of critical state concern". The Florida Keys are studied in this thesis in regards to this type of designation in order to research the intergovernmental aspects and problems of this legislation. A survey of the people of the Keys and interviews with their elected officials during the first few months following their designation as one of critical state concern uncovered some of the inherent difficulties involved when the state imposes its guidelines on a local municipality within the ALI context.

The relationships between the United States and Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom will be investigated. Not only will the entire period of 1970-1991.3 be examined, but the pre-1987 crash and the post-1987 crash periods as well. In addition, the Chow test will be employed to probe for any structural change occurrence relating to the worldwide stock market crash of October 1987. Evidence of cointegration is found to exist vis-a-vis the U.S. with the U.K. and Germany for the entire period; however, since the crash, only the U.K. and Japan have exhibited equilibrium relations. Absolutely no cointegration was detected for Canada nor France with the U.S. market.

Emphasis is given to the particular attributes of coins which differentiate between them and the aggregate money supply. Also included is a survey of relevant literature which concentrates upon the demand for money and the demand for currency as theoretical supports for the demand for coins. The models to estimate the demand for coins are discussed and then the estimations themselves receive attention. The models are estimated using multiple regression, and results tend to confirm the hypothesis that the traditional demand for money function does not precisely explain the demand for coins. The conclusion is, basically, that there are indeed other variables explaining the demand for coins which must be included in the model.

Show moreThis thesis analyzes the impact of transnational corporate investment patterns in five Latin American economies: Mexico, Peru, Columbia, Venezuela, and Brazil. Two important theories attributed to the dependencia and neoconventional schools of thought are first described and then econometrically tested for the above countries. The basic framework for econometrically testing these theories consists of a model specifying the domestic and foreign determinants of domestic capital formation. Domestic determinants are formulated in terms of the 'accelerator' and loanable-funds theories of domestic investment behavior. Investment by multinational corporations is then added to the model to see if it makes any significant contribution towards indigenous investment. In order to take into account the lagged effects of multinational investment, an Almon lag estimation technique was adopted.

- MONEY, OUTPUT, AND PRICES: A CROSS SPECTRAL ANALYSIS.
- Creator
- DMYTROW, ERIC DONALD., Florida Atlantic University, Redman, Milton, College of Business, Department of Economics
- Abstract/Description
-
This thesis tests the transmission mechanism through which changes in the rate of growth of the money supply affect changes in output and prices. Cross-spectral analysis was used to test the transmission mechanism. The results support a neo-keynesian transmission mechanism which associates changes in the money supply with changes in investment.

Show moreThis thesis contains an investigation of the potential for increasing dental productivity in Florida. This investigation of the Florida dental care industry is conducted from a micro-economic-theoretical perspective. It is performed under a methodological framework that incorporates the estimation of a dental production function for Florida using data on general practices from the ADA 1977 Survey of Dental Practice and employing the transcendental logarithmic production function. As a complement to this estimation a survey of the relevant literature and an examination of the general characteristics of Florida dental practices are presented. The general implication is that the productivity of Florida practices could be increased and associated delivery costs could be reduced by expanding the market for dental services, adding more staff, and increasing the number of dentists per practice, as well as by a more efficient use of dental personnel including auxiliaries with expanded functions.

- THE FOREIGN EXCHANGE CONSTRAINT ON THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF IRAN (1965-74).
- Creator
- ERFANI-EZATI, GOSHTASB., Florida Atlantic University, Stronge, William B., College of Business, Department of Economics
- Abstract/Description
-
This thesis focuses on the foreign exchange constraint on the economic development. An analysis of the foreign exchange constraint on the economic development of Iran was made for the 1965-73 period. An econometric model was constructed and estimated. It was found that the prediction of the two-gap model was confirmed for Iran during the 1960's, i.e. the supply of foreign exchange was the major constraint on Iran's growth during the sample period.
