Show moreThe annihilation of women's artistic creativity in selected works by the Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska is a result of societal conditioning. Two short stories from Lilus Kikus and the short novel Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela portray the process of deterioration and demeaning obliteration of women's creative faculties, as they are conditioned to accept the conventional roles of wife and mother. Poniatowska's texts posit that, upon assuming these roles, the exercise of the creative artist's use of her imagination is postponed or detrimentally transformed forever. In the selected texts, women's artistic creativity is chronicled first at its best while the characters are girls or adolescents. The neglect, procrastination, and attention to domestic and repetitive tasks as opposed to the pursuit of their creative vein is observed in the adult women characters. Poignantly portrayed is Quiela, Diego Rivera's common-law wife of ten years, who destroys her life and creative power by trying to be the perfect wife. These literary works speak forcefully to the social issues and institutions that place women artists in a bind; are the roles of artist, mother/wife incompatible?

Two important and influencing factors on his work and his way of looking at life were the family and cultural environment he was exposed to and the effect of his physical defects, which he succeeded in compensating due to his energetic personality. Quevedo used conceptism as his literary style, applying his genius to the creation of metaphors, taking the Spanish language to its maximum expression as no one else had done before him.

Show moreThe translation of Geny Vilas-Novas' novel Adeus, Rio Doce emphasizes the importance of promoting a literary exchange between Brazil and the Spanish-speaking world. This study analyses contemporary Brazilian literature and situates the author in the post-modern literary movement, stressing two post-colonial fundamental themes: emigration and feminine literature. Millions of undocumented emigrants from Latin America live nowadays in the United States displaced in the American society and leave suffering family members abandoned in their native countries. One of the roles of Latin- American women writers like Vilas-Novas is to reveal and denounce the subaltern conditions of this emigration movement in the globalization process, under the unusual perspective of those left behind. The linguistic and semantic challenges and difficulties faced during translation are a metaphor for the crossing of linguistic, cultural, social, and historical borders by Latin-Americans in search of better life opportunities.

This thesis uses a mythological and archetypal approach to prove that the narration--whose underlying element are Andean myths--is structured as the mythological adventure of a hero who must comply with the archetypal rites of passage: separation, initiation, and return. Lituma's trials lead him to a social and spiritual maturity and to discover the mysterious ancestral Peru, disdained by the more westernized Peruvians of the coast. The Andeans' fear of foreigners is represented by the myth of the pishtaco or throat-cutter, counterpart of the classical Minotaur. The encounter of the two scissioned worlds is only possible through love and friendship, in the framework of a pluralistic society, which is suggested by the novel's resolution.

The allegory of concentric circles facilitates the explanation of the complexity of these processes that intertwine and interact expanding to the infinite. This is not only a metaphor but also a metaphysical dilemma which Borges has utilized to explain time not as an absolute progression where a before and after are feasible but rather as a cyclical idea in which the return and the repetition are eternal. The three key concepts will be analyzed, using as an example, a short story by one of the English writers who Borges has cited and translated, Gilbert Keith Chesterton, "The Three Horsemen of Apocalypse." Borges translated Chestertons tale prior to writing "The Garden of Forking Paths," and this thesis demonstrates how we may discern Chesterton's influence on the Argentine's fiction, particularly within the genre of the detective story.

The purpose of this thesis is to compare the portrayal of the Mirabal sisters in two different books, In the Time of the Butterflies (1994) by Dominican-American writer Julia Álvarez and Vivas en su jardín [Alive in their Garden] (2009) by Dedé Mirabal, the only sister to survive. Mirabal implements an important biographical component in her testimony while Álvarez utilizes the genre of historical fiction to describe the events leading to the sisters’ assassination in 1960. This thesis explores the concepts of “truth” and “fiction” in Mirabal’s memoir and Álvarez’s historical novel, arguing that the range of objectivity and subjectivity in these two genres are interchangeable in the representation of this tragic episode in the history of the Dominican Republic.

Show moreThis project examines politicization of the university. Critics have long charged that politics, and specifically identity politics, has infiltrated the classroom via radical professors. Scholars who lament the decline of the western canon claim that a massive wave of new untested works - largely written by women and people of color - have replaced the works of dead white men leaving our students ill-prepared. While most of the scholarship in this area has been written in the area of English literature departments, this project focuses on the field of Hispanic Literature. If identity politics has challenged the canon in the university, it is expected that within identity-based disciplines the infiltration of politics should be substantial. To test the politicization of the university, I examined 38 Hispanic Literature survey courses from a variety of American universities. I found a high degree of consistency among these syllabi and concluded that critics of the university have at best overstated their case.

Show moreThe textiles of Jalq'a and Tarabuco, from Bolivia, are known worldwide for their beauty and complex designs. While most academic attention has concentrated on weaving techniques and esthetics, this thesis explores the semiotics of the designs, not only in an ethnographic context, but as an expression of ideology, cosmogony, and the indigenous groups' cultural history. In addition to reading colonial Andean sources on the pre-Inca and Inca weaving traditions, I analyze the symbolic elements of a sample of acsus, women's traditional skirts. I link the symbols still used today to depictions of pre-Inca mythology and the cultural inclusions from Hispanic culture that have created a syncretism from processes of transculturation.

Show moreInformation about the influence of environmental factors on the development of attention and memory is scarce. This study analyzed the relationship between parents’ educational level, school type and sex on the development of attention and memory. Four hundred and seventy six children (age 5 to 16 years) of public (PuS) and private schools (PrS) participated. The sample was divided in two age groups: G1, age 5 to 8 years and G2, age 9 to 16 years. Attention and memory sub-tests from the Evaluación Neuropsicológica Infantil-ENI (Matute, Rosselli, Ardila and Ostrosky, 2007) were analyzed. There was a significant effect of age on all sub-tests scores where older children obtained higher scores. Also, there was a significant effect of sex and type of school in some tasks, where girls had higher performance than boys and, the students of PrS scored higher than students of PuS. An interaction between type of school and sex was also evident: PrS girls showed higher performance than other groups in some tasks of attention and memory, especially those that imply verbal information processing. There was a significant correlation between the parents’educational level and the performance in G2. Sons of parents with high educational level show better performance than sons of parents with low educational level. The results are discussed in terms of the environmental variables effect on the development of attention and memory.

The literary character of the "student" does not depart only from its reality. Its characteristics are based on the student stories from the oral medieval tradition, a residual cultural elements, as described by Maxime Chevalier, as well as the emerging picaresque narratives.

Show moreThis thesis analyzes the complexities of Argentinean politics during Juan Domingo Perâon's last presidency, (1973-1974), as presented in Osvaldo Soriano's novel No habrâa mâas penas ni olvido. Soriano's work, set in the fictitious town of Colonia Vela, in the state of Buenos Aires, illustrates in a small scale the different social and political components that make up the national body. Historical and fictitious elements dramatize the conflict among the left and right wings of the Peronist Party. These two factions divide the villagers, who hold diverse images of Perâon and what the party entails, while putting their political beliefs and physical well-being at stake. Quickly the two splinter parties trigger an open arm conflict while fighting under the same slogan: "Perâon o muerte". Supported by diverse theoretical perspectives, this thesis reveals that Soriano's novel sheds light into one of the most confusing periods of Argentinean history while rescuing the sacrifices of the people.

Followed by a short biography of the authors ; and then, a third chapter dealing with the characteristics of their works in relation to the literary mainstream of Spain. The last chapter is a summary and analysis of the play and its characters. Finally, the annotation in English, in which special care was taken to identify all difficult passages; translate them and place them on the same page in which they occur, in such a way as to achieve a balance between the footnotes and the glossary, to make it easier and more enjoyable to read the work.
