Note(s): Field experiments in which predators were excluded from soft-sediment communities have been done in the York River, Virginia, the Indian River, Florida, and the shallow continental shelf off southeast Florida. The York River experiments revealed that predators on infaunal macrobenthos are important in determining community structure and population densities. There appeared to be only two major predators in shallow water - the blue crab Callinectes sapidus (Crustacea: Portunidae) and the spot Leiostomus xanthurus (Pisces: Sciaenidae).
