Details are given of a study conducted to determine whether the sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna can be used to control nuisance algae occurring in tanks or ponds used to culture Gracilaria verrucosa . The seaweed appeared to serve readily as an excellent shelter for the fish; gut contents analyses on the mollies revealed consumption exclusively of organic detritus, diatoms and green algal nuisance algae. The reduction of nuisance algae by the fish did not affect Gracilaria productivity, and the tanks remained noticeable cleaner than those lacking Poecilia.
