Note(s): |
Since 1975, the red seaweed Gracilaria tikvahiae has been cultivated in an experimental mariculture system in Fort Pierce, Florida. Research on controllable variables in the system, such as nutrient enrichments, water motion, and flow rates of seawater have led to the development of successful management practices in land-based systems. Current research is investigating the possibility of cultivating this seaweed either directly in the ocean or in saline desert waters, such as those commonly found in the southwestern United States. This article is the author version of a conference presentation and the final published version may be cited as: Hanisak, M. D., & Ryther, J. H. (1986).
