Note(s): I am honored to have been invited to present theSecond Annual Roger Revelle CommemorativeLecture. Although I never had the opportunity to meetor work with Dr. Revelle, his depth and breadth ofknowledge and scientific investigations have inspiredand challenged oceanographers to interpret the resultsof their research in the context of systems, rather thanas isolated phenomena. It is with this challenge in mindthat I will discuss the role of the oceans in humanhealth, and specifically, challenges in realizing thepotential for the discovery of new, marine-deriveddrugs to treat human diseases.
