Note(s): The authors propose potential solutions to redesigning current TV systems and multimedia architectures to support more interactive services and develop further the potential of network technologies. A distributed multimedia architectural system that can support on demand and interactive TV applications requires a hierarchical configuration of servers and network switches capable of compressing, storing, retrieving, and transmitting data over the network to its destination, then decompressed and synchronized for playback at the receiving site.
